You only use the Riot Gun or the Uzis when you’re too close or you run out of explosives. The thing about Shadow Warrior 1997 is that you’re supposed to be using explosives and keeping your distance. As opposed to a large number of enemies at once in a big arena, that can keep my attention going. Whereas in og sw, i'd kill like 1 or 2, find a key and then kill 2 or 3 and perhaps get lost and then eventually get bored. So if I had to guess as a result, in the newer games, most of what my brain can think about, is going to the next arena of a lot of enemies to kill. Perhaps another thing that doesnt help, is that i have a short attention span. So it's not hard for me to see why the two games that followed SW2013, had more emphasis on that. In fact, whenever I think of my last playthrough of SW2013, i dont think much of the key hunting, i think a lot more of the hordes of enemies trying to surround and kill me in arenas. but the difference there is that they were very straightforward and were broken up by arenas of enemies. I get that SW2013 has key hunting like the og game. Even when i knew there were a lot more hitscanners than the newer games and that i had to take cover. I died a lot in SW3 on Hard, but that doesnt even compare to the amount of times i died in og SW even on normal. So as a result, they rarely came off as bullet spongey to me, even on Hard difficulty. Mostly thanks to the fantastic gore graphics and sound effects. But other than that, whenever I stabbed, shot or dealt the killing blow to an enemy in those games, I really feel like i did that. As for the newer games, I can agree that some of the tougher enemies in SW3 are spongey. I dont mean that the guns dont do much damage, i mean the guns dont feel satisfying to use. I think you're mistaking what I said about the guns. games like SW1997 are sometimes called "corridor shooters", make no mistake though they are the farthest thing from arena shooters.

it's more realistic and more satisfying than bland encounters in linear arenas that happen the same way in the same order with the same enemies each time no matter the direction you try to complete the level in.

it's a very fast paced shooter where your life is on the line the whole time, every little mistake has a high chance of costing you health, requiring you to minimize exposure while filling anything that moves with shurikens, hot lead and explosives.Īlso just gonna say it, the level design in 1997 is what the whole series should have always aimed for. If the newer games are what you're looking for, you won't find it in the 1997 game. ALL of the other SW games are leagues more bullet-spongey, with it taking usually at least 2 seconds longer to kill an enemy than in 1997 with most weapons. Not a single gun in 1997 is weak, even if you're using them all incorrectly. It's easier than Blood at least, but some people just can't handle those old boomer shooter games I guess.
